In the book Deadly, Julie Chabbaro investigates the story of Typhoid Mary. Prudence Galewski, a 19-year-old woman, becomes an assistant to Mr. Soper, a man who works in a laboratory at the Department of Health. Prudence soon finds herself helping out with the case of an invisible killer. This killer isn't your normal serial killer. It's actually a very harmful illness known as typhoid. With witnesses and samples, the department is able to track down what may be the source of this outbreak. Typhoid Mary, originally known as Mary Mallon, was an Irish Immigrant who was accused of spreading typhoid. In this book, readers will follow Prudence and the Department as they struggle to find ways to halt this tiny, but fierce killer.
Librarian's Note: For an adult, well-researched, historical novel on this same topic look for Mary Beth Keane's Fever. This book is discussed in detail in the MOOC Plagues, Witches, and War.
