The Apps and Kids program, scheduled for Monday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m., has been postponed until Monday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. Please join us then for a program in which we will discuss research on the impact of digital media on kids, spotlight review sources for finding the best apps for children, and then preview some of those apps.
Award-winning kids' author Pam Muñoz Ryan will present her newest novel, Echo, on Thursday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. In Echo, aimed at ages 9-14, Ryan deftly combines history and fantasy as she tells the story of a magical harmonica that connects three children through different time periods. School Library Journal notes that "Ryan has created three contemporary characters who, through faith and perseverance, write their own happy endings, inspiring readers to believe they can do the same." Kirkus Reviews gave Echo a coveted star, calling it "a grand narrative that examines the power of music to inspire beauty in a world overrun with fear and intolerance," adding that "it's worth every moment of readers' time."
Ryan is the author of several award-winning books, including Esperanza Rising and The Dreamer, and a biography of singer Marian Anderson, When Marian Sang. At our event, Ryan will read from Echo and detail how she came to write it. After taking questions from the audience, she'll sign books for audience members. Politics & Prose bookstore will be selling copies of Ryan's books at our event, but the program is free and no purchase is required. Please join us for this opportunity to meet a top children's author!

Please join us tonight -- Monday, March 9 -- at 7 p.m. for the Caldecott Club, otherwise known as our family book club. We'll be reading some wonderful picture books that didn't qualify for the 2015 Caldecott Medal because the illustrators live in other countries. (Only American illustrators, or those who live in the United States, qualify under Caldecott criteria). Of course, we'll also be offering our usual refreshments: lemonade and cookies. No registration necessary to come have fun at this program for all ages.
