We have two indoor pools in Takoma Park and a nearby outdoor pool.
The indoor pool at Piney Branch School has an ever-changing schedule, so call first to see if they are open. 301.270.6093. Free for Y members, non-members receive a TP resident discount, and 30 day discount passes are available. For the summer they are open:
In the past the pool at Montgomery College has been available to local residents for lap swims and is relatively inexpensive. Call 301.650.1428 for information.
The nearest public outdoor pool is Long Branch Pool - on Piney Branch Road near the intersection with University. Call 301.431.5700. Swim lessons began this week. Recreational swims: (until August 21)
Check Things To Do for other places to swim. For big water slides and fountains go to Wheaton/Glenmont or Martin Luther King.
Alternatives? You can wade in Sligo Creek with your dog (water shoes recommended) or read a good book. Floating in My Mother's Palm has some wonderful scenes of swimming in the Rhine. The author is Ursula Hegi, who also wrote Stones from the River with the same characters.
Once again we beg your patience as once again we were flooded. Several boxes of books are going off to be saved by freeze-drying, and many more are drying on the tables and floors. We have left one table in the adult room almost free of wet material, and the chairs in the magazine area as well as the reference carrels are available - so you can still sit when you come to the library. And of course there is still plenty to read.
The silver lining? You may even find something interesting on the tables or carts that you wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
Takoma Park Jazz Festival Saturday, June 11, 11am to 7pm.
And to prepare ... we have jazz of all flavors on CD. And all manner of books ranging from the great Charlie Parker Played Be Bop in the picture book collection to The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz in the reference room.
