Reference Question: what does a chipmunk sound like?
Listen here. Sounds sort of like a repeated chip, but the name wasn't coined by the English. It is probably derived from an American Indian word atchitamon/ajidamoo. Meaning? Depends upon the dictionary you consult.
At this time of year it is more likely zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Chipmunks hibernate.
Family Sciuridae; genus Tamias; many species.
